Digital Media

WHAT SIGNIFICANCE DOES THE MEDIA TRANSFORMATION HAVE?

New Business Models in the Digital World

The Incubator does research on the "Digital Media" field because technological innovations are profoundly changing media and their use – and thus our society. Armed with about 17 million Euro in grants, about 60 people are addressing the question of change in the digital culture. From everyday life to politics, law and business: the digital turn has changed the world. Entire industries and social responsibilities are being rethought—from academic publications to public media.

The Incubator’s digital media concentration investigates this transformation and its economic potential: How is the use, production and distribution of digital content changing? The concentration has also created a new experimental space, within which partners from the university and business can try out new ideas in digital formatting and application. The Incubator’s interdisciplinary teams cooperate with local professionals, such as the online advertising agency web-net and Global Players such as the software NGO Mozilla Foundation.

The lecture series ANALOG provides an impetus for the regional economy. About 2,800 participants from over 100 countries joined Leuphana’s first online university course, ThinkTank Ideal City of the 21st Century to design models for the city of the future. They use the educational platform Candena Scholar, set up by the Lüneburg firm, Candena GmbH, one of the Incubator’s own start-ups. This area of concentration produced Leuphana University Lüneburg’s Centre for Digital Cultures (CDC) — an international hub for researching digital cultures, whose members include visiting researchers from leading universities such as Princeton and Harvard. The first DFG-sponsored research group in Lower Saxony, "Media Cultures of Computer Simulation" is connected to the Centre as well.
